The Growth Cycle for Generative AI Has Been Unprecedented

Fueled by the massive productivity benefits it provides, generative AI is quickly transitioning from a novel technology into a vital tool for businesses and knowledge workers to complete more tasks, faster. It's no surprise, then, that more and more applications are coming off the shelf with generative AI-enabled components. From Microsoft Office 365 and Github Copilots, to Slack AI, to Notion, generative AI is becoming an integral part of the digital tools we use daily. In fact, there are now more than 12,000 applications available that incorporate generative AI capabilities. In this blog, we explore the rapid proliferation of generative AI-enabled applications and how Liminal is helping organizations embrace this surge while still protecting their most sensitive and critical data.

The Rapid Rise of Generative AI-Enabled Applications

The adoption and usage of generative AI skyrocketed with the public release of Open AI’s GPT-3.5 in November of 2022, wherein it became the fastest consumer application ever to reach 100 million active users. Seeing the massive potential of this technology, developers large and small rapidly began looking for ways to incorporate generative AI into their applications. As more models have come online, the pace by which new gen AI-enabled tools have come to market has grown exponentially. In the last 6 months alone, there have been more than 5,000 new AI-powered applications released, designed to help expedite tasks in myriad different categories, including:

  • Content Creation: From standalone applications like Jasper or Copy.ai, to tools with embedded functionality like Microsoft Office 365’s Copilots or Figma’s FigJam AI, there are hundreds of generative AI-enabled tools available to help with copywriting, design, image generation, and video production.
  • Business Productivity: Project management, data analysis and visualization, and forecasting are just a few of the ways that generative AI-powered functionality within tools like Notion, Tableau, and Clari are helping streamline labor-intensive processes.
  • Communication + Customer Service: There are now dozens of solutions like Yellow.ai and Kore.ai that leverage generative AI for their chatbot applications, while tools like Custify and Yuma AI use the technology to enable organizations to drive efficiency in customer service workflows.
  • Programming + Development: Github Copilot, DeepCode, and Tabnine represent but a few of the applications that now incorporate generative AI to assist with code writing, testing, and debugging.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. Thousands of applications across every conceivable sector now boast AI capabilities, driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of what's possible. And this is only the beginning.

Safeguarding Data Amidst the Surge of New Applications

At the current rate of proliferation, we can expect to see more than 20,000 generative AI-powered applications available in the market by the end of 2024. While this represents incredible opportunity, it also creates real urgency for organizations to implement a security posture that ensures sensitive company, customer, and employee data is not exposed through interactions with generative AI tools.

Liminal exists to help organizations say yes to generative AI. Our unique horizontal platform gives companies complete control over how data is treated in any interaction with generative AI. This means that even as the landscape of new tools grows unbounded, you have a singular security platform to help protect your most sensitive data.
